Stain Prevention

Stain prevention of the teeth is something that we should all be actively trying to fight. With the vast amount of oral hygiene products available to help us, it is very easy to achieve.

Extrinsic stains are external stains that form on the surface of the tooth and are caused by poor oral hygiene, they are not part of the structure of the tooth. Intrinsic staining is found within the tooth and is mainly hereditary and requires the advice of your dentist to best help reduce.

Many food and drink substances can cause teeth staining such as Coffee, Tea, Fruit juices and foods that contain a lot of colorings. The build up is very slow but over time it will become very obvious. Medication is also another cause of teeth staining especially Iron based treatment and even some mouth washes that containĀ Chlorohexidine can discolor teeth.

The simplest way to help in stain prevention is to perform regular oral hygiene practices and to consult with your dentist regularly.

Stain prevention methods:

  • Brush Teeth twice a day.
  • Avoid dark and acidic substances such as Coffee and Fruit Juices.
  • Flossing daily.
  • Use mouth wash on a regular basis.
  • Visit your dentist at least twice a year.

These are some ways to help reduce teeth staining but if your teeth are already stained then a Whitening procedure will be needed. Remember to always consult with your dentist when taking action in helping stain prevention.
