Mouthwash

Mouthwash is considered by many as an additional function of good oral hygiene that aids in fresh breath, and kills bacteria but most don’t realize that it also helps in the prevention of gingivitis and to break down bacterial plaque that causes tooth cavities.

The anti bacterial and anti plaque formula found in mouthwash consists of fluoride, which is what protects against tooth decay.

It is important to remember that mouthwash must be used with other methods of oral hygiene such as brushing teeth and flossing, and should not be relied upon alone to fight bacteria within the mouth.

The American Dental Association have confirmed that brushing and flossing alone are enough to maintain oral health but mouthwash is a great added extra, especially the alcohol based formulas which help aid in the removal of mucus and food particles from further down the throat.

There are three types of mouthwash available to use:

  • Cosmetic Mouthwash – designed purly to eradicate bad breath and is not effective when it comes to the removal of plaque or bacteria.
  • Antiseptic Mouthwash – designed to actively fight against plaque and to protect your teeth from decay. This mouthwash can reduce plaque build up by more than 25%.
  • Fluoride Mouthwash – this is formulated to help people who are prone to tooth decay. Fluoride is found in many substances such as drinking water and toothpaste so should only be used under reccomendations from your dentist.

Although most mouthwash can be purchased over the counter, it is always advisable to consult with your Dentist before adding his to your daily routine.
